Top 6 Questions About Wood Floor Refinishing

wood floor refinishing1. How long does the drying process of wood floor refinishing take?

Since we use water-based polyurethane at Gorsegner Brothers rather than oil-based polyurethane, drying time is relatively fast.  Depending on the size of the job and environmental factors that may affect drying time.

2. When can I go back on the floor?

Expect to stay off your floors for at least 4 hours after the process is complete; you can put furniture back after 24 hours and rugs may be placed down a week after for proper curing. For those who own a dog, it’s best to keep them off the floors for 24 hours after the last coat of poly has been applied.

Quick tip: Many of our clients schedule their wood floors refinishing appointment right before they leave on vacation.

3. What is the best time to have our wood floors refinished?

Ideally, you would refinish your wood floors when you first move into your home. This is the most opportune time because all the furniture will be off the floors already. If you want to refinish your floors while you’re still living in the home, put everything in the garage, consider renting a storage unit or Pod to store furniture for the week.

4. Am I able to refinish one room and not the whole house?

Only if the hardwood floors are restricted to an isolated area or a transitional piece is installed. If your wood floors flow from one room to another, it’s not advised to refinish just one area as it would affect the uniformity. If you’re unsure, give us a call for a consultation.

5. Does the process of wood floor refinishing leave dust all over my house?

The Dust Containment System we use at Gorsegner Brothers is certified as being 99% dust free. As no system is 100% dustless, you may experience some minor fine dust, but our containment system is the only certified system on the market today.

6. What can I do to prolong the finish on my hardwood floors?

Maintenance is key. In addition to wood floor refinishing to fix major damage like scratches, gouges and fading, we advise our homeowners to embrace “shoes off” while inside. This can have a big impact on the longevity and durability of the floors. Also, use felt pads under furniture and chairs rather than plastic tips, which can mark floors and add entry mats at each doorway.
