4 Ways to Prepare Your NJ Home for Professional Wood Floor Installation

The holidays are coming and your floors are looking shabby. Whether this is your first year hosting the holidays or you’re just—finally—ready to replace that worn-out wall-to-wall carpeting, there’s no better time than now to invest in professional wood floor installation.

Wood Floor Installation: 4 Ways to Get Your NJ Home Ready for the Holidays!

There’s nothing like the warmth of wood flooring. Professionally installed wood floors lend an air of both elegance and coziness to your home at the same time. With a multitude of stains, widths and species of wood flooring to choose from, a new floor will upgrade your home for decades to come.

Modern wood floor installation is significantly less invasive than in years past, but still requires a bit of temporary disruption. Make things easier on yourself and prepare for your installation.

The more you can do in advance, the better. Even simple preparations on your part can help mitigate the mess, fuss and stress that comes with remodeling your home.

Here are four steps to help simplify the wood flooring installation process and make it go as smoothly as possible.

1. Schedule in Advance

The holidays are the busy season for flooring installation. Homeowners tend to have a similar idea: updated, photo-worthy floors to impress the guests. The sooner you can book your appointment, the more flexibility you will have available to work around specific dates.

2. Know What You Want

When you make your wood floor installation appointment, try to be prepared to answer the following details:

  • Type of flooring (unfinished or prefinished)
  • Current subfloor type (plywood or concrete)
  • Material size (2.25, 3.25, 4, 5, etc.)
  • Species of wood (Red Oak, White Oak, Brazilion Cherry, Santos Mahogany, Rosewood, American Cherry, Ash, Maple, Hickory, American Walnut, Yellow Pine or Heart Pine)
  • Removal of Materials (Furniture, Appliances, Trimwork and Baseboards, Current Flooring)

If you don’t know all of these answers, that’s ok. We have experts that can help walk you through the process. Installing new floors is a very visual process, so we highly recommend taking a trip to our showroom and looking at our samples. This will give you an idea of what species of wood, plank size and stain color you like the best.

3. Prepare Your Space

Once you have your appointment scheduled, get your rooms ready for the installers by moving furniture and breakables out of the way. Professionals from Gorsegner Brothers can do this for you, but must be informed in advance to account for it in the overall wood floor installation estimate.

If the new flooring will be installed in a bedroom, cover or remove any hanging clothing in closets. If installation will take place in any other room that has appliances, disconnect them safely in advance.

Removal of doors, trim, baseboards and old flooring must also be addressed. Decide whether you will complete this job or if you wish to have a professional crew perform the work. Discuss these needs with your Gorsegner Brothers installation team in advance.

4. Control the Environment

Inside temperature during wood floor installation can impact the longevity of your investment. Did you know that wood can move and flex depending on temperature and moisture conditions? Wood naturally expands with heat and retracts with cold temperatures. Additionally, low moisture can lead to cupping and high moisture can lead to gaps.

That is why wood floor acclimation is so important.

According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), wood floor acclimation is “the process of adjusting (conditioning) the moisture content of wood flooring to the environment in which it is expected to perform”.

So what can New Jersey homeowners do? The best environment for wood floors is within a relative humidity range of 30-50% and within a temperature range of 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
