The Finishing Touch!

Hardening – The hardening process or crosslinking process takes approximately 21 days.
The floor may be walked on after 12–14 hours—but the floor is susceptible to scuffing or marring when moving furniture prior to the completion of the hardening process.
Carpets or rugs should NEVER be placed on the floor for at least 3 weeks after refinishing.

Prevention Tips

In order to keep its beauty and enjoy a great looking floor longer, a few requirements must be met. Observing them will save you a lot of hassle.

Regularly sweep or vacuum a floor to prevent sand or abrasive dust from accumulating and scratching the finish. (Sand and water are wood’s worst enemies.)

Place doormats outside and rugs inside every entrance of the house to prevent sand and abrasive dust from accumulating on the floor.

Avoid interior rugs that are tightly woven or that have a rubber underside. They prevent proper air circulation.

Place a rug in front of the kitchen sink and dishwasher to protect the floor from dropped items and from water or oil spills.

Use adequate floor protection (felt pads) under all furniture and chair legs in order to ease their movements and to prevent scratching the floor. (Make sure to use specially designed commercial protectors. Keep them clean and in perfect condition.)

Use protectors under all narrow casters or replace them with rubber casters (avoid plastic casters.)

Protect the floor when moving heavy pieces of furniture. Carry them or place them on a rug, wrong side up, and slide the rug. (Refrigerators should never be moved without adequate floor protection.)

The relative humidity level in your home must be maintained at 45% (i.e. 40—50%) throughout the year.

Hardwood is a living substance, which reacts to changes in relative humidity. It absorbs or releases humidity according to the seasons. Consequently, its dimensions change.

In summer, when humidity is at its highest, it is absorbed by the wood which then expands. This expansion causes the strips of wood to push against one another. The floor is cupped or ‘cupping.’ These variations can be minimized with proper heating, ventilation, a dehumidifier.

In winter, on the other hand, when the heating system is on, relative humidity in the house is much lower. The wood releases its humidity and consequently shrinks. Small gaps appear between the wood strips. It is then suggested to use a humidifier in order to minimize the extreme shrinkage effects. (Wood burning stoves and electric heating systems have a tendency of creating an extremely dry environment.)

Keep “high heel” shoes in good condition. Damaged or worn heels may expose the metal tip, which will certainly damage your hardwood floor. Some types of sports shoes may also damage the surface of your floor.

Keep your pets’ nails well groomed in order to prevent them from scratching the surface of the floor.

Protect your floor against direct sunlight or any source of intense artificial lighting. Over time, intense light will discolor exposed surfaces. To minimize the contrast created by the absence of light under carpets and furniture, as compared with the rest of the floor, we recommend that carpets and furniture be moved from time to time and that sources of intense light be reduced.
